It’s time for a Jubilee

This month in my regular preview of what is coming up, we have something of a special occasion for our diaries.

That is – the Platinum Jubilee, celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne.

I’ve been alive for Golden, Diamond and Sapphire versions, but really don’t remember anything of particular note. Maybe this is a Mandela effect issue though, 2012 had a lot going on in general. I must confess, I’m not really clear what actually happens during a Jubilee, and what’s happening this time around.

That being said, Union Jacks have started sprouting up in all sorts of places where I live, and there’s been extremely vague allusions from various people (read: my partner Ellyn), about street parties and such.

The real Platinum anniversary has actually already happened – on 6 February, so this week’s events are in fact just the celebration of that. We all get a couple days off work (well I say all, there will still be millions of hardworking souls still keeping the country moving either way), which is nice.

I have no particular plans other than to go see my dad, maybe watch something on TV (Trooping the Colour anyone?), and generally toast Her Majesty for 70 long years. The celebration does at times feel somewhat wistful, as what happens next lingers like the ghost at the feast.

So what else is coming up this month?

The United Nations World Environment Day falls on 5 June. We also have Clean Air Day on 16 June and Father’s Day on 19 June.

US inflation figures come out on 10 June and the latest UK figures from ONS on 22 June. We have GDP numbers for the UK on 13 June and wage data on 14 June.

There are a number of monetary policy decisions with the ECB on 9 June, US Federal Reserve on 15 June and Bank of England on 16 June.

On 23 June is the sixth anniversary of the UK voting to leave the EU. Good job we’ve moved on from it, eh.

Finally, on 22 June we have the first data for the census of England and Wales which was conducted last year. It should be packed with interesting demographic insights, and will definitely be one to watch for.
