Saints fans take flight with Le Tiss Air
- Southampton FC fans to fly on private charter to upcoming away match vs. Man City courtesy of partner eToro
- Response to fact football fans will spend up to £39million this season on train travel alone
Lucky Saints fans are about to swap their train ticket for a seat on a private flight to their away game versus Manchester City as a reward from club partner eToro for their loyalty this season.
The flight is inspired by an in-depth report due to be released later this month by eToro and produced using data and analysis from KPMG’s Football Benchmark team. The report looks at the costs associated with being a dedicated match-going football fan, including delving into the average distance and costs of travel for fans of each Premier League club.
Figures show that football fans are forecast to spend up to £39 million on travel to away matches by train this Premier League season alone, travelling an average of 5,328 miles. Saints fans are among those with the furthest to travel clocking up an average of 12 per cent more miles than the average fan. Overall, the report indicates that Newcastle fans have the furthest to travel at 8,976 miles by car and spending £1,916 on train travel should they attend every away game. While by comparison, fans of Aston Villa spend just £655 on train travel and drive 4,212 miles per season.
eToro, the global mutli-asset investment platform, says the private flight, nicknamed Le Tiss Air after club legend Matt Le Tissier aka ‘Le God’, is a way to reward those loyal football fans for investing in what they love. The flight will take off from Southampton Airport on Saturday 2nd November transporting twelve of the club’s most loyal fans to and from Etihad Stadium to see their team in action versus Manchester City.
Saints and England football legend Matt Le Tissier, attending the launch of Le Tiss Air said, “Saints fans are an incredibly passionate bunch, and this is a fantastic initiative to make their away trip extra special. I had the privilege of playing in front of Southampton fans throughout my entire career and I know first-hand how vital their support is. This is even more so when you know they’ve made the trip to see you in opposition territory. I hope the fans enjoy the moment and get behind the boys against City.”
Iqbal V. Gandham, UK Managing Director at eToro said, “eToro chose to partner with six Premier League teams in order to reach and support the fans who are at the heart of these clubs. We know that Saints fans will follow their team anywhere, but over the course of the season it does come at a cost. We found Saints fans are paying around £1,266 to see their team play away from home, up £53 on last season. Add to that the cost of tickets and merchandise and it’s quite an investment. Le Tiss Air is a unique way to reward those fans for their devotion to their team. What better time to do this than what is set to be an exciting match versus Manchester City in November.”
eToro will launch a social media competition, supported on Southampton FC’s social media channels, rewarding loyal fans with seats on the charter and tickets to the game. Local Southampton newspaper the Southern Daily Echo will also offer fans an extra chance to win seats and tickets via a competition for its readers.
The lucky winners of seats on Le Tiss Air are due to be announced on Monday 14th October. Winners will also be joined by a surprise club legend throughout the flight.
eToro has paid to offset carbon emissions from the flight, with the money going towards climate protection projects that directly reduce the impact of greenhouse gases.
